STATE RIPE FOR SOLAR FARM PICKING

A new locally founded renewable resource company has its eye on bringing solar farms to the region.

NuQuest Energy is reviewing 50 locations, some of which are in Tangipahoa Parish, said Kirk Barrell, co-founder for the company. With Louisiana lagging in this area compared to other states, he believes it is an excellent opportunity to assist the state in catching up in the renewables area.

Working with Tangipahoa Parish is not new for him. He and the three other company founders were born and raised in New Orleans and have previously worked in the local oil and gas industry.

“The key goal in the company initially is really focusing locally and working with the people we know and the people we’ve worked with historically in our past in the oil industry and current in the oil industry, and really help Lousiaina catch up in the renewable space,” he said.

NuQuest plans to use a build-to-own model, instead of just flipping the land of signed leases for profit.

“We’re actually taking leases on locations we have done very detailed evaluation on and our purpose is to take those locations through the regulatory process, get them approved, get an interconnection with the grid and build it and then operate it,” he said. “So essentially we will be doing the agency through the entire process, which we also feel is significant being a local group for a landowner because you will have your partner very close.”
